Travel to Ukraine

Ukraine1.jpgUkraine is located in the central Europe at the crossroads between Europe and Asia. Ukraine borders on Romania, Moldova, Hungary, Slovakia, Poland, Belarus and Russia. Having the total area of 603,700 sq.km, Ukraine is one of the biggest countries of Europe. The country is subdivided into 24 regions (oblasts) and the Crimea - autonomous republic. The capital is Kyiv (Kiev in Russian transliterations).

State language is Ukrainian. The majority of Ukrainians are bilingual and speak Russian as well. Russian is used widely in the Crimea, Odessa, Kharkiv and Dnipropetrovsk. Among foreign languages the most popular is English.

Getting to Ukraine:

Kiev has connection with most major European cities and America. Most international flight arrives to Kiev ukraine2.jpgInternational airport Boryspil which located 38.6 km (24 miles) from Kyiv.

International trains enter Ukraine from seven countries at more than 10 locations.

Most major Ukrainian cities have daily services from Moscow; it's 15 hours to Kiev and 28 hours to Lviv. You can go between Kiev and Berlin (26 hours) via Warsaw (16 hours) and Brest (10 hours).

You can travel by ship between Odessa or Yalta and various cities on the Black Sea and Mediterranean. The main year-round destinations are Haifa (Israel), Limassol (Cyprus), Piraeus (Greece) and Port Said (Egypt). The most frequent and reliable is the Odessa to Istanbul route.

Visa requirements:

Visas for citizens European countries

Starting from May 1, 2005 through September 1, 2005 no visas are required for citizens of EU countries or Switzerland.

No visas are required for citizens of Poland, Hungary, Romania, Mongolia, Yugoslavia (except Slovenia and Croatia) and the countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States (except Turkmenistan).

Visas for US citizens

ukraine3.jpgThe President of Ukraine signed the Decree No. 1008/2005 "On the Establishment of Visa-Free Regime for Citizens of the United States of America" on June 30, 2005. According to the mentioned Decree, starting July 1, 2005 visas are not required for the US citizens who enter Ukraine within six months after their previous trip to Ukraine or transit through its territory for a period of up to 90 days with a valid American travel passport.

For the US citizens who enter Ukraine with the purpose of employment, permanent residency, study and work at the diplomatic missions of the USA in Ukraine or with any other purpose if they are going to stay in Ukraine for more than 90 days, visas are required.

Visas for citizens of Canada

The President of Ukraine signed the Decree No. 1134/2005 "On the Establishment of Visa-Free Regime for Citizens of Canada" on July 26, 2005. According to the mentioned Decree, starting August 1, 2005 visas are not required for the Canadian citizens who enter Ukraine or transit through its territory for the period of time of up to 90 days with a valid Canadian travel passport.

For the Canadian citizens who enter Ukraine with the purpose of employment, permanent residency, study and ukraine4.jpgwork at the diplomatic missions of Canada in Ukraine or with any other purpose if they are going to stay in Ukraine for more than 90 days, visas are required.

Visas for citizens of Japan

The President of Ukraine signed the Decree No. 1107/2005 "On the Establishment of Visa-Free Regime for Citizens of Japan" on July 19, 2005. According to the mentioned Decree, starting August 1, 2005 visas are not required for the Japanese citizens who enter Ukraine or transit through its territory for a period time of up to 90 days with a valid Japanese travel passport.

Visas for citizens of other countries

In order to enter Ukraine you need a visa. Visas can be obtained from the the Embassy or Consulate of Ukraine in your country. Please contact Ukraine embassy in your country for current visa requirements.
